Course overview

This one-day CPD workshop is designed to enhance the electrocardiography (ECG) knowledge and interpretation skills of healthcare professionals. It is intended to provide participants with a foundational understanding of ECG abnormalities, a systematic approach to ECG interpretation and opportunities to consolidate learning through group discussions, practical scenarios, and formative quizzes.


By the end of the course, participants will be able to apply a systematic approach to ECG interpretation, recognise common ECG abnormalities, and explain the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. Participants will be encouraged to consider the implications of ECG findings within their own scope of practice and in accordance with local policies and procedures.


The content of the course:
•    Focused Anatomy and physiology
•    ECG principles and settings
•    Leads placement, sinus rhythm
•    Systematic approach to rhythm recognition
•    Atrial, ventricular & conduction abnormalities
•    Pacemakers and implications
•    Cardiac ischaemia
•    Clinical case studies and practice


The purpose of the course:
•    Enhance ECG foundational knowledge and interpretational skills
•    Understand possible pathophysiological mechanisms
•    Apply a systematic approach to ECG interpretation
•    Increase participant's' confidence in interpreting ECGs


The objectives of the course:
•    Describe Cardiac anatomy and physiology relevant to ECG interpretation.
•    Perform a 12-lead ECG in accordance with national standards.
•    Apply a systematic approach to ECG interpretation and rhythm recognition.
•    Interpret common atrial, ventricular, and atrioventricular rhythm abnormalities.
•    Interpret ECG changes associated with myocardial ischaemia and myocardial infarction.
•    Explain the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying common ECG abnormalities.


The course is divided into theory (9:00am -2pm) and practice, run in Immersive Reality Suite (2-5pm). Lunch not provided.

Who is this course for?


This course is designed for registered healthcare professionals working within the multidisciplinary team who do not specialise in cardiology or cardiac care. It is suitable for healthcare professionals seeking to develop or refresh their foundational ECG interpretation skills.


Professionals who may benefit from this workshop include, but are not limited to, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other registered health professionals working in settings such as:

  • Acute hospital wards
  • Specialist clinical services
  • General practice
  • Community healthcare services
  • Intensive care units
  • Emergency departments
  • Educational settings


Who is this course NOT for?

This course is not accredited and may not be suitable for individuals seeking education to support formal diagnostic decision-making, independent ECG reporting, or advanced ECG interpretation (e.g. advanced scope of practice). The workshop is also unlikely to meet the learning needs of healthcare professionals who routinely interpret ECGs or who already possess advanced ECG knowledge and skills (e.g. cardiac catheterisation laboratories staff).
