Course overview
This course is delivered one day a week for 3 consecutive weeks and focusses on the mental health assessment and care of clients with mental health problems within physical health care settings.
The key areas explored are:
- types of mental illnesses
- mental health assessment
- risk assessment
- brief mental health interventions
The unit will be delivered through a combination of lectures and classroom seminars with experienced healthcare professionals and people with lived experience of mental illness.
100% attendance is mandatory. All the teaching is delivered face to face (9am-5pm).
Although there is no assessment, students are required to complete additional work outside these seminars.
Attendance on this course will allow the practitioner to develop further knowledge and skills to enhance the care of clients with mental health problems within own health care facility.

Prerequisites
This course is recommended for practitioners working with those with mental health problems, there are no restrictions. Applicants need to be working with people with mental health problems but can be from any professional group, including healthcare assistants.
