Course overview

The aim of the course is to prepare healthcare professionals such as midwives, neonatal nurses, nurses, community specialist practitioners and general practitioners to competently undertake an examination and assessment of the healthy newborn infant.
You will learn through lectures, seminars reflective discussions, online personal tutorials and self-study.
Learning in practice will take place over a period of 9 months supervised by an identified mentor and an assessor with expertise in examination of the newborn.

This unit requires approximately 200 hours to complete which will include lectures, seminars and self-managed learning. In addition to the taught sessions (approximately 30 hours), you will spend a minimum of 90 hours engaged in direct practice in your own clinical area, where you will be allocated a clinical supervisor.

This course requires 100% attendance. All the  teaching will be delivered Face to Face (10am-4pm). 



Learning outcomes

Having completed this unit the student is expected to:

1. Critically review the relationship between antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal events that may impact on the health and well-being of the new born infant

2. Critically appraise the health status of the newborn infant by exploring situations that may arise during the examination and demonstrate effective communication skills with parents, other healthcare professionals, the wider interprofessional team and relevant agencies where appropriate. 

3.Analyse ethical, legal and professional issues pertinent to the examination of the newborn infant in order to demonstrate awareness of personal responsibility and professional accountability in situations where outcomes are unexpected.

4. Utilise a systematic approach to holistically examine a newborn infant demonstrating knowledge, skill and competence during the examination 


Assessment


ILOs 2 & 3 will be assessed via a presentation (3000 word equivalent) 100% weighting 

Evidence of at least 10 newborn examinations 

(5 of the 10 newborn examinations directly supervised)

PLUS

1 assessed newborn examination undertaken in the clinical environment 

Pass/Fail

The mentor (assessor) could be one of the following: 

Consultant Paediatrician, Middle grade Paediatrician, Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (ANNP), Midwife Mentor/Assessor, Unit Leader

Prerequisites

This course is designed for: Midwives, neonatal nurses, nurses, community specialist practitioners and general practitioners.

You must have access to babies that are 72 hours old or less to be able to complete this unit.

Normally students may enter Level 6 (degree level) study if they have been awarded:

  • An Advanced Diploma, HND, Dip HE or Foundation Degree (awarded by a UK HEI or Edexcel or SQA)
  • An equivalent qualification (the learning outcome of which are demonstrably appropriate in terms of knowledge, understanding and skills) equivalent to 120 credits at Level 5.

If you do not meet this criteria you are still able to apply for this unit but we may ask you to complete a study skills handbook to familiarise yourself with academic writing at degree level. The study skills handbook will be sent to you when we have received your application form.

Applicants that already have a degree may wish to consider applying for this unit at Level 7 (Master’s level).
