Course overview
This Master's level module will evaluate the role of partnership working in health promotion, considering the issues involved in health promotion and health promoting partnerships. You'll examine the evidence base for health promotion and partnership working in public health practice and explore issues such as the role and function of different agencies, needs assessment, planning, execution and evaluation.
Indicative Content
- Examination of the theoretical and ideological basis of health promotion and partnership working and its evaluation, in public health practice
- Examination of the scope of the concepts of partnership working within health promotion.
- Consideration of how to enable effective partnership working, including working with consumers/users/residents/communities
- Consideration of the role of partnership working and health promotion in reducing inequalities in health and access to health services
- Critical discussion of concepts, models and theories associated with health, health education and health promotion
- Critical examination of inter-agency approaches to programme development and the strategic role of health promotion
- Exploration of the impact of national and international policy development on health promotion
Learning And Teaching Methods
In this unit students will engage in a variety of learning activities such as lectures, quizzes, watching audio visual materials, listening to podcasts, reading, discussion, tutorials, seminars and guided independent study. These activities may be face-to-face or online and they will enable expert insights into the context and scope of partnership working in public health, the independent acquisition and appraisal of knowledge as well as critique of theory and practice and development of dissemination skills.
This unit is one of the core units for the MSc Public Health
This course requires 100% attendance.
Learning outcomes
Having completed this unit the student is expected to:
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the theoretical and political basis of health promotion and partnership working and the basis for its evaluation
- Demonstrate independent and critical evaluation of the role and potential function of agencies, individuals and communities in maintaining and promoting (influencing ) the public’s health
- Synthesise and critique underpinning assumptions about partnership working
- Critically evaluate the evidence base for health promotion and partnership working in public health practice.
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of needs assessment, priority setting, planning, implementing and evaluation in health promoting partnerships
Assessment
Learning outcomes will be assessed by through a written report 3,000 word equivalent (100%).

Prerequisites
Normally students may enter Level 7 (Master's level) study if they have been awarded:
- Undergraduate degree (honours or non-honours)
- An equivalent qualification (the learning outcome of which are demonstrably appropriate in terms of knowledge, understanding and skills) equivalent to 120 credits at Level 6.
